Skinimalism | The Make Up Minimalism | Divya Toshniwal |

I came across this new term: Skinimalism, and I am instantly in love with it.  Skinimalism can be explained as going with minimal products on your skin. Skinimalism is the makeup minimalism.  Till a year ago, the trends in the beauty industry was filled with heavy make-up looks. Even the no-makeup look had layers of products on your skin. Not only did people put on makeup for occasions but it had become a part of our everyday life. Women would spend hours before stepping out of the house to put on makeup and style their hair and then again a half before going on to the bed to remove it all. With the Covid-19 lockdown and staying home for longer periods of time, we actually turned to the no make-up phase in our lives. Many of my make-up products expired too. Though I have been into minimalism for more than a couple of years now there were still a lot of products that I used on my skin. But the year 2020 has brought about this great change where I do not even ...

Effects Of Stress On Skin | Skinimalist Indian |

My skin has always been acne-prone. So little carelessness on my side and one of them would just pop up. I have really become alert about it avoiding all kinds of oily food, having more water, not putting on any makeup, using a medicated cleanser, and never overdoing my skincare. Things were getting just in control when an unexpected turn took place in events of my life. Certain things are clearly not in our control and one such stressful situation came into my life. For the whole day, I was under tremendous stress about all those uncontrollable situations thinking about all the consequences. Clearly a very unproductive day and to my surprise also a bad day for my skin. So one day of stress in my system and voila 4 pimples on my skin by evening.

Yes! you heard it right. 4 big painful pimples. It wasn't an immediate conclusion that it happened because of stress. I backtraced a lot of events and realized it had happened a few more times before when nothing in my routine had changed except for a stressful situation and the pimples had popped out of nowhere

So, I decided to do a little research and this is what I came to know.

Stress impacts not only your mental health but also your physical health. It was well known that stress can cause headaches, breathing problems, cardiac issues, body aches, stomach ache, etc. etc. Basically, stress impacts the function of your physiology which is already a little weak and that is the reason why stress has different impacts on different bodies.

When it comes to our skin stress can affect it severely too. Stress causes a release of cortisol( a hormone) as a result of which there is excess oil( sebum) production in your skin glands. This results in acne and breakouts. But it isn't the only way the skin is impacted by stress. When a person is under stress its immune system reacts to the threat and its typical reaction is inflammation. Usually, this inflammation protects our body from microbes and wounds. In stressful situations, it doesn't actually have something to fight with and thus this inflammation comes out on our skin in form of rashes, redness, and acne.

Here is a list of troubles your skin might face because of stress.

1. Acne and breakouts
2. Redness
3. Rashes
4. Increase in already existing skin conditions
5. Dryness and rough skin
6. Loss in the elasticity of the skin
7. Wrinkles and fine lines
8. Puffy eyes and dark circles
9. Delayed healing of wounds.

So how can we deal with something that is not in our control?

We definitely cannot deal with the external elements. Yes, we can solve the situations but we cannot make them not come to us in the first place. Then what can we do to avoid the harmful effects of the stress that eats us up? We can control the internal elements.

Here is what you can do to avoid the harmful impact of stress on your skin.

1. Never ignore your skincare routine. Have a good skincare routine and follow it dedicatedly even when you are anxious or tired.

2. Get enough sleep. It gives your brain and the body enough time to heal.

3. Get regular exercise. Physical activities release happy hormones like serotonin and endorphins. It also affects dopamine levels and helps reduce stress in the body. You can read more about the happiness hormones here.

4. Find some time for yourself. Practice self-care

5. Practice stress management techniques like yoga, meditation, music and dance therapy, art therapy, etc.

6. Avoid alcohol or any other form of drugs. Smoking and drinking can cause an additional increase in your stress levels.

7. In case of chronic stress take help from a professional.

8. Take frequent breaks to do things that you love.

Stress is something that none of us can avoid but what we can definitely do is not let it turn to burnout. We should start focusing on minimizing the harmful effect of stress in our lives and our skin problems would come under control too.
